Using the same materials that the inhabitants of the Estaque in the 16th arrondissement of Marseille used in order to shape their neighborhood (see the statement of intent here), I created two curved walls, using old roof tiles as a matrix. The shape of the walls recalls that of the tiles themselves, which at the time were formed directly on the thighs of the workers.
From walls we make passages brings to light the structural capabilities of roof tiles as partitions. This form allows for a large amount of vertical and horizontal stability, and as such could be exagerated, stretched out, piled up into more imposing structures.
It also reflects the way in which the estaquéens appropriated the space they live in: a large amount of passages and partitions which aren’t visible on any land registers or cadastral maps, forcing any outsiders into wandering paths determined by the whims of different generations of estaquéens.
